Abstract

Residents of the settlements exposed to radiation from nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site are entitled to financial reimbursement. In accordance with Russian law, payments depend on the total (cumulative) effective dose; therefore, victims should be informed. Biological doses were retrospectively evaluated in 82 people who previously lived in the vicinity of Semipalatinsk weapon testing region. For dosimetry, stable chromosome aberrations were assessed using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). FISH analysis of translocations revealed increased frequency of stable aberrations in 21 (26 %) patients compared with control values and helped to estimate irradiation doses. Established biological irradiation doses ranged from 16 to 62 cGy.
